Content Development and Link Building - The Two Are Mutually Exclusive, At Least If You Want Results

 

I've lost track of the number of webmasters I've seen trying to "game" search engines. They create loosely constructed websites with next to no content, and build links with a view to making a "head start". While it probably works a lot of the time, the truth is that in order to have a fully functioning website, you need to have quality content in place, and it needs to work not only to drive search engine rankings, but to fuel link acquisition and above all else, sales. Content serves numerous purposes, it's not a labour you must endure for the purposes of a search engine algorithm.

One of the first reasons you need quality content is, obviously, to fuel search engine rankings. Quality content, when it's promoted correctly, gets linked to. What's more, when quality content is linked to, it increases the overall authoritativeness of your website, and conceivably makes newer rankings easier to obtain. Quality content creation also fuels long-tail rankings, or rankings for terms which are longer than four words in length, and are typically more intent focussed. These rankings again, are typically a result of both content creation and link building.

For example, let's say you own a payday loans website - on this website, you decide to create a number of reviews pages for some of the top payday lenders in the UK. In doing so, and by applying targeted link building to these reviews pages, you can conceivably widen the range of target terms your website is capable of ranking for. Not only that, by you will also open your website up to rankings for a whole host of term variations, all of the search terms which include your main target keyword, but are typically longer search terms (long-tail queries).

This is, in essence, the long-tail of search - it's a method of search engine optimisation which is increasingly popular for small business owners looking to make headway in the world of search. It's a method of Search Engine Optimisation that staves away from the traditional approach of targeting vanity search queries i.e. generic terms, and moves rather to the more tried and tested approach of targeting the tail of search.

If you want results in search you need to focus on both facets of keyword targeting, targeting generic terms and targeting the long-tail of search.
