Search Engine Optimisation, as in industry, propagates fallacies. It's difficult, particularly if you're new to SEO, to separate the wheat from the chaff and get to the point about what measures will truly increase your visibility in search. In this article, I will aim to demystify the process - you need to spend your precious time doing what works, and avoiding what doesn't.

On-Site, On-Page - Ignore It, Almost All Of It: The truth, away from content development, there is very little you actually need to do on-site which is going to mean the difference between position 10 and position 11 in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs).

PageRank, however, is not the be all and end all of Search Engine Optimisation. A better strategy would be to look at the overall authoritativeness of the website in question, analyse the total number of links pointing into all the pages on the website, before making a decision one way or another as to the value of the link.

Targeting Vanity Terms: A vanity term is a generic term which attracts a large amount of search volume. For example, the term "payday loans" could be considered a vanity term. Most CEOs, and even small business owners, set their stall out to target these terms. The truth is, if you have a brand new website, and you are competing in an industry with many very large players, the odds on you acquiring a top placed ranking position, or even a first page ranking position, for the term "payday loans" is very remote.

Rather, get clever. Start targeting the long-tail of search, or rather the search terms which exist beneath the main generic terms. These terms are significantly less competitive and require simply content development and low-level link building to rank for.
